Despite our name, our Volkswagen camper vans are all under 3 years old so they drive at very respectable speeds for their type (max 60/65mph).
But if you’ve ever taken a holiday in a camper before, you’ll know that life takes on a different pace; off the beaten track and away from it all, you will find that you really unwind in your home-from-home. So, if you fancy stepping out of the rat-race and dropping down a gear or two, hiring a snailtrail campervan might just be for you.
snailtrail.co.uk is a small and friendly company lead by Lucy and Steven Lord. Steven has over 20 years experience of car and van hire – but his heart lies with VW campers, and so snailtrail came about. He looks after the campers (they are his flock!), making sure they are well serviced and cleaned, and in tip-top condition for your hire. Lucy furnishes and equips the campers, answers your email enquiries and also organises the honeymoon, anniversary and birthday packages. Both Steven & Lucy answer the snailtrail phone – they like nothing more than to speak with you their customers, and to hear your camper stories and dreams.
Anne valets the campers and checks that everything is present and correct (thanks Anne for all your hard work).
Normand is a hero and a hugely knowledgeable mechanic – he lovingly and meticulously services the fleet, and calls each camper by her name (sweet).
The kids and their friends are campervan crazy and have helped to choose all the campers’ names and the colours of the paintwork – giving each snailtrail camper real personality and making Betty, Pearl, Flo, Elsie, Matilda, Nell, Pru, Sylvie, Ruby and Dot all part of the family too. We love them, and we know you will too!
All of our Volkswagen Campervans are fleet vehicles, by which we mean they are not rented to you from afar, but are on our fleet. Because they return to us after every rental we can ensure that they are clean, fully equipped and up to scratch, and that you have peace of mind.
Do Snails Like Trees?
Woodland Trust The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading conservation charity and is dedicated solely to the protection of our native woodland heritage, by attempting not only to halt the destruction of our beautiful woodland, but to create new woods too. The Trust cares for over 1,000 woods and has so far planted more than five million trees. We pledge to support at least an acre a year through the Trust’s dedication scheme. Not least because we like trees.
These are the woods we are helping to support so far:
- Great Knott Wood, Windermere, Lake District
- Old Wood, Sheringham, Norfolk
- Porter’s Wood, Woodbridge, Suffolk
- Sanctuary Wood, Gorran Churchtown, nr Mevagissey, Cornwall
Special Reserve Camper
Gracie is our own special reserve camper – we have her waiting in the wings so that in the unlikely event that your chosen hire camper is unable to make your reservation, Gracie will come to your rescue! We took the decision to buy a reserve camper because we want our customers to be happy campers, and we would hate to disappoint. Gracie has only had to step into another camper’s tyres occasionally, but it’s great to know that she’s always there if we need her!
We are based on the Hertfordshire / Bedfordshire border, just off the A1 approximately 30 miles north of London. Our location is a great place to head north, south, east or west from. Our campers often venture into beautiful Norfolk and Suffolk, up to Scotland and Cumbria, and over to the Peak District and Wales. Of course they love to go to Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset and Sussex, the South Coast and the Isle of Wight too!
Travel throughout the British Isles
You can take our campers all around the British Isles and in the unlikely event of a breakdown you will have 24hr roadside cover provided by the AA.
Getting to Know the Camper
On rental day we will need some time to run through the camper facilities and operating instructions with you, so please do allow approximately 30 minutes for this. However, on board each camper van there is a manual giving full details of operating instructions, together with our contact details should you need to speak with us during your hire.
Making a Booking
You can either call us on 01767 600440 to enquire about making a booking, or you can complete the Contact us/Booking Enquiry Form. We will endeavour to get back to you as quickly as we can – we aim to respond within 24hrs.
To hire one of our campers you need to have a full driving licence and must be over 25 years of age.
You are welcome to collect your hire camper from us in Edworth. You may wish to garage your own car in our storage unit during your hire. If so please do let us know when making your booking – there is no charge for this service but it is entirely at your own risk. If arranged in advance we can also meet you at a train station local to ourselves (Baldock, Biggleswade and Ashwell – all accessible from London Kings Cross) – this service is also free of charge.
How to find us
Travelling northwards on the A1
… take the Edworth turning and follow the signs to Edworth over the flyover. Turn right at the junction and then right again into Edworth (signpost says Edworth, Hinxworth & Ashwell). Continue for approximately 1/4 of a mile until you come to a sharp bend. Turn left just after this bend – there is a sign saying “Lower Farm” but sorry, this is a road with no name! You will come to a fork in the road – turn right here into the farmyard – Snail Trail is on your left.
