Travels with Ruby ...

Paul. Caron & Tom

18/09 to 20/09/09

Here are some photo's of the wonderful weekend we had with Ruby. We are Paul, Caron and Tom, plus Fennel the Spinone. Ruby took us away to celebrate Paul's Birthday weekend from 18th Sept to 20th Sept.

Setting off - Dad still in his work clothes having dashed direct from the office. How exciting to be sitting up front! Tom is loving it, can't you tell?! We all noticed that the view over the countryside is great from Campervan height. Everything looks beautiful, or is that just the 'Ruby effect'?

What a cute bottom Ruby! Off we go!We decided that driving Ruby is a bit like driving a boat but the experience is great fun, if a little scary at first...

Settling down for our first evening in Ruby, watching a film on daddy's laptop. What more could a six year-old ask for?It has quickly stopped being weird referring to a vehicle by name and we are already all thinking of Ruby as our fifth family member...'Do you think Ruby would like to go to....?!"

Playing 'Dead man's fall' off of the dunes a Holkam! Don't ask me! Some kind of game which involves throwing oneself off of the dunes in various ways (Obviously, falling like a 'dead' man is one of the styles required, although I'm a bit uneasy with the political correctness of this...). When asked to 'fall' in the manner of his Head Teacher, Tom shouted "Don't forget there is a cakebake in the hall" whilst falling relatively daintily! You'll have to trust me when I say this is reasonably accurate!

Dog and Dad hiding during a game of hide and seek - Daddy, you are going to have to try harder than that!

Sand and water between the toes.

Crabbing at Wells. Please don't lean too far! There must be knack to this, that we clearly don't have!

If you have to do homework, where better than in a bright red camper van? Ruby almost made maths a pleasure.

Daddy's 'Campervan birthday' celebrations. We were very careful with the candles! As you can see from the number of candles, Paul is only six...or is that sixty?!? Umm....

The good bit!

TWO packets of Fizz Wizz from Tom. What a birthday present! Do you remember this stuff? I'm sure it was called Moon dust. I remember sitting at the back of the French class, too many years ago, with it cracking and popping in my mouth. After this picture was taken, we all sat in Ruby popping, cracking and laughing. I could show you photo's of this too, but they involve lots of tongues being stuck out with popping Fizz Wizz on the end and as you can imagine, the pictures are not that attractive.

I brought some indoor sparklers to brighten the festivities but insisted they needed to be lit outside, much to Tom's bemusement. So Tom sat in the luggage rack holding a sparkler, waiting for it to flare into life. However, it was so dark outside that we couldn't see what we were doing and so had to abandon the attempts. Oh well, the sparklers lit beautifully when we got home!

On the road with some reading material and bear for company. It feels very decadent to ask "Would anyone like anything from Ruby's fridge?" whilst being driven along!

Building sandcastles in Wells.

No, he didn't manage to eat it all, but the dog's ice cream didn't even touch the sides on the way down...I really must teach her to lick her ice creams.

About to lose my chips to the dog.

Ruby came home with us on the Saturday night and our eldest cat instantly made himself at home!

On the way to school in a bright red Campervan! How fantastic!

Ruby looked so beautiful on our drive, that I just had to take some more photos. She has the ability make everywhere look cheerful.

...I guess we really do have to take her back....

Thank you Ruby. Oh, and thank you SnailTrail!

April 2008

Friday 11th April 2008

We set off in Ruby around lunch time - very excited and a little nervous. Olivia is very happy with her seat riding up front with Daddy although Steve is convinced that we have packed everything but the kitchen sink (I tried really hard to pack light!?) The journey to Cheddar took about 6 hours, Friday afternoon traffic was not nice. After stopping in a very nice pub in Cheddar we arrived at a lovely campsite at about 9pm and got set up for the night.

Saturday
We woke to a lot of rain and a very muddy campsite. After a very yum egg sandwich made on Ruby's stove and a cup of tea we set off to Cornwall driving through Cheddar Gorge on the way. We arrived at Treveague Farm Campsite south of St Austall just after lunch. We went to check out Vault Beach which you can only get to along the cliffs and had beautiful views. We had a fish and chip supper overlooking Mevagissey harbour and then went back to Treveague farm where we said goodnight to the piglets and lambs before settling down for the night.

Bedtime for Olivia and Ruby the campervan

Sunday
We woke up to another wet and windy morning. After a bacon and egg sandwich we set off to the Eden Project and parked Ruby next to a boyfriend so she didn't feel lonely (older man!).

We had a great day seeing the amazing gardens of eden, decorating cupcakes and listening to stories in the Mediterranean gardens. We then drove to Padstow and were walking around when we spotted another Snailtrail Camper, Betty! We then enjoyed Rick Stein's fish and chips and Eden Ale for our supper and enjoyed a very lovely sunny evening.

Monday
We decided Ruby needed to find some more surfer dudes so we visited some lovely beaches today. We started of at Harlyn Bay then drove to Mawgan Porth (stopping at Bedruthan steps to check out the view but it was very windy and so notgreat for Olivia). After lots of sandcastles and searching for crabs in rock pools we drove to Crackingdon Haven to the cottage that friends were staying in and which would be our home for the next few nights.

Tuesday
The weather looked bright so we decided to actually use our bikes today and drove to Wadebridge to do the Camel Trail to Padstow.

Our friends wanted Rick Stein's fish a chips and even though we had already had it we didn't object! After lunch we all hopped on the ferry over to Rock and played on the beach for a few hours and enjoyed the sunshine.

Wednesday
Another warm (ish) sunny day so we headed off to Black Rock Beach so the guys could do some surfing. We took a picnic and had a lovely lunch - bliss....

Thursday
We set off for a long coastal walk this morning to try and burn off all the fish and chips, clotted cream ice cream and scones we have been eating! We spent most of the afternoon at Crackington Haven beach and we managed to buy Olivia a mini Ruby that she can keep when we have to give big Ruby back tomorrow :-(

Friday
Very sad to drop Ruby off home and back to all her friends as she has definitely become part of the family! She has really looked after us over this holiday and has been the star of the show wherever we went. Thank you Snailtrail for such great memories and we hope to see you again one day soon.

Love Sarah, Stephen and Olivia Appleyard x

She would never say where she came from
Yesterday don't matter if it's gone
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows
She comes and goes

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you...

Don't question why she needs to be so free
She'll tell you it's the only way to be
She just can't be chained
To a life where nothing's gained
And nothing's lost
At such a cost

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you...

There's no time to lose, I heard her say
Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams
And you will lose your mind.
Ain't life unkind?

Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you?
When you change with every new day
Still I'm gonna miss you...
